There has been a lot of media buzz about acai (pronounced ah-sah-ee) and its many health benefits. Acai is a superfood that is packed with healthy omega acids, is rich in antioxidants, and is a natural energy booster. The acai berry originates from the Amazon rainforest and is often found in a pureed form because the berries are too delicate to withstand the shipping process. Acai’s taste is often described as a dry berry flavor with a dark chocolate aftertaste.
Living in sunny California, I am always looking for a healthy frozen treat for those warm days and an acai bowl is the perfect choice. I like to top my acai bowls with fresh berries, mango, banana, granola, and a sprinkle of chia seeds. Once the acai base is made, topping choices are endless. Not only are acai bowls a guilt-free dessert for myself, but my kids also love eating them for breakfast in place of the usual cereal or oatmeal.
ACAI BOWL RECIPE
-1 acai smoothie pack (I use Sambazon unsweetened smoothie packs)
-1/2 cup orange juice or coconut water
-1/2 tsp. chia seeds
-Run a frozen acai smoothie pack under warm water for about 30 seconds, then break into small chunks and add to the blender. Add orange juice or coconut water and blend until smooth, but still thick.
-Transfer the acai mixture into a bowl and add fresh fruit and granola. If desired, sprinkle on some chia seeds.
Now you know one of my favorite recipes for a healthy treat. What’s your favorite?
